We present our guide explaining step by step how to set up a local transport bike sharing. As part of the KlimEntLaster team - the Transportrad Initiative - we implemented the Transportrad test project in Mattersburg, Freistatt and Amstetten. The key finding first: the investments are not high when using the Radlgeber:innen system and free rental via the bike distributor platform and contribute a lot to emission-free mobility.
A small transport bike sharing offer works best in a combination of local supervisors, a free web platform and smart rental boxes, which make it possible to rent a bike around the clock via smartphone. You can download the guide here. The above-mentioned supervisors are called "Radlgeber:innen" by the KlimaEntLaster team. The guide therefore recommends a hosting system similar to the "Grätzlrad" in Vienna or Carvelo2go in Switzerland, the largest sharing provider in this segment. Private individuals or traders take care of the bike for rental and can use it themselves.
Spreadsheet for all sharing costs
A calculation table is enclosed with the guideline, in which all cost factors of a regional transport bike sharing are listed and documented with values based on experience. Each community or initiative can adapt and fill in this Excel table itself. In addition, tips on public relations, contracts and bike model selection are given.
Research results on the users
The research results of the KlimaEntLaster project are briefly summarized in the brochure, more detailed fact sheets are available in the download area of the project website. The users of the free test sharing in Amstetten, Freistadt and Mattersburg mainly transported children and shopping, rarely adults and heavy goods. The rental period was often more than 24 hours - the most popular rental day is therefore Friday, so that trips on the weekend are possible.
